Where are your favourite places to ride? I find fall the best time to get out on the trails because of the pretty colours and (next to) no bugs!

I'm lucky enough to be able to get into the main tract of the Dufferin Forest (main entrance on Airport Road in Mansfield) from my place. It's about a 40 minute ride to get in at the southwest end, and from there you can literally go for days. There's a tract of the Simcoe Forest that meets up with it, too, so between the two there is an amazing assortment of trails available, all on sand footing. I've done a couple of OCTRA rides in the Dufferin, but mostly just ride there on my own. There's been some discussion of opening the forest to motorized traffic but the local horse community has been fighting hard against that; it's lovely to have it just as it is, a nice quiet sanctuary from dirtbikes and ATVs.
If you go, btw, one of the downsides of the Dufferin is there's no water available. If you trailer in and you'll be riding for any length of time, remember to bring your own.

Is there an admission fee or do you require some sort of trail pass to ride there?

My favourite place is Dundas Valley, short drive from home and nice trails this time of year. I usually park in the main lot and hop on the rail trail. Beautiful hacking this time of year! I'm also fairly close to the Elora cataract trail so that's another nice one to get this time of year as well.

midnightdream weren't there footing issues in Dundas Valley or was that only certain parts of the trail?

Haven't been in a while but I'm checking it out this weekend and I'll let you know. I have a friend who rode there this past weekend and there were no complaints from her about it.

The Dundas Valley requires either a day equestrian pass or a year long pass in order to ride on the trails. The money is used for upkeep of trails and bridges.

The Ganaraska Forest is a great place to ride. 11000 acres of bush with lots of trails. Permits required but reasonable. The Sandaraska Park is available for camping if you want to make a weekend or longer trip.

Dundas Valley is amazing. The footing issues seem to have been resolved. Earlier this year it was terrible as they had put down a really rough gravel on the Main Loop and unless your horse was fully shod you couldn't walk the trail without damage to their feet, plus cyclists and strollers were having a hard time as well. Not sure if they put screenings on top or it just washed away a bit over the summer but we went about a month ago and it was fine.

Good to know cloudnine!
I also recently heard that Cristie Lake Conservation Area allows hacking?? Has anyone been there and have a review?
