While browsing sale ads tonight, I notice many horses jumping XC without leg protection. WHY would you want to do this? I just don't get it. You are jumping solid obstacles, your horse's legs are easily hurt. Any of you compete without leg protection?

When I'm schooling or competing xc, I put boots on my horse, but when I'm out hunting I don't. With the hunting, I don't know how long we will be out or what kind of stuff we'll have to go through, so it's generally safer not to put anything on my horse's legs.

Hunting I totally understand. It's completely different. You don't know what you're going through either. I mean more XC at events or schooling.

How many is "many"? I've jumped my horse before without leg protection, especially if it might've just been sale ad photos. At a show I likely wouldn't go bare legged, however I don't think I've ever really seen any horses at all at shows without some kind of boots on. Schooling at home doesn't get me that concerned though...

when our horses are jumping they always have boots and bell boots on. Flatting they always have smbs and bell boots. All our working horses have bell boots on 24/7. I used to think this was ridiculous but when you spend so much time training and see injuries that could have been prevented with the simple addition of these things it is worth the effort. To each his own but our horses are worth too much now and mean too much to us to not take these simple precautions.
If I could I would boot them outside too, but other than bell boots I don't because this is natural movement. I feel that when we are asking them to do something it is our job to protect them. Same goes for shipping - but that's another topic.
