I am a university student bound for Chile in the New Year. I am hoping to go a month or two early and work on a farm in exchange for room and board to experience the different culture prior to starting school. I am wondering if there is anyone here that happens to know someone living in Chile? I know its a long shot, but thought this would be a great place to ask Thanks in advance!

I travelled to Chile back in December 2008 and stayed out in Pucon while my husband was working. Pucon is a really nice, safe and popular tourist area. It is located about 7 hours south of Santiago, close to the border with Argentina. I spent a couple of nights at Antilco (http://www.antilco.com) - a horse trekking facility. They primarily speak German and Spanish (as many in that country do) but the owners could speak enough English that we could converse. They also had an English-speaking American working student while I was there. They were lovely folks and had very comfortable cabins for their staff and guests. Sadly i never got to go on one of their many long haul treks into Argentina but would love to one day. Might be interesting to see if they are currently looking for working students. Pucon is also known for its white water rafting, hiking, zip lining and day treks up Mount Villarica (a must-do activity - hike straight up the mountain for 5 hours with fit, young Chilean guides, walk around an active volcano at the top - "don't fall in" was the extent of the safety restrictions at the top - and toboggan back down at 120 km/h on a small piece of plastic covering your butt. It was wild!) so there's lots of stuff to do on days off. Hope that helps. Have fun! I throughly enjoyed my time there and would go back in a heartbeat.

Not that it matters any, but I just realized that I was there in 2009, not 2008. Also, the farm is something like 10-12km outside of the town, so you'll want to make sure that you have a bike available, or a car if you can afford it. If you do end up in that area, I can give you a name of our friend if you run into trouble. He lives in Temuco (about 2 hours away), but is a super nice guy, fluent in English and Spanish, and would likely be able to help you out of a bind, if needed.
