I am wondering if someone can recommend a bit for a hunter with a soft mouth - one that gives control over frnces but is not harsh.

It's really hard to say. I have had great luck with my OTTB eventer who is strong but sensitive in a rubber mullen mouth. There are really a million things to try, but with the limited information you've given and not knowing you or your horse it's next to impossible to suggest anything. I would consult a good coach!

Without knowing anything at all about your particular horse, I have my soft-mouthed young guy in a Sprenger KK Ultra D ring. It's gentle, but he responds well to it, and it looks classy in the hunter ring.
What works for your horse might be totally different.

I ride my OTTB in a waterford D ring. It is a fluid bit that is very soft in their mouth, but when pulled on by the rider, it gives you a nice control without your horse loosing it. My guy was in a Copper roller Dee bit and I found that was too harsh with him and he loves the waterford!
