USEA has just passed a new rule allowing half marks in dressage (http://eventingnation.com/home/dressage-half-marks-other-usea-rule-changes-in-effect-dec-1/). I don't show dressage but do they already do this in Canada? What would be the benefit to having half marks vs full marks only?

They've been doing this for a while in dressage, along with some other changes to make the scoring system better. The benefit is that a judge might not feel a movement was worth an 8, but was better than a 7. Rather than give you the lower 7 because you didn't deserve an 8, they can now reward you with a 7.5, which when losers/winners are made with fractions of a percentage, it can be quite significant. It just makes the scoring more precise.
