Anyone experienced with taking horses across the border? I'm wondering what documentation is required. I've got the health certificate, coggins, and the CFIA vet signed off on it. But for "brokerage" - what is required? (this is "permanent" - over 30 days)
Here's the problem: Vet has used lessee's name as owner on all documents. Lessee has to fill out brokerage forms, but she has filled out my name as owner. which I'm sure will cause all sorts of problems with paperwork when the horse arrives at the border. The last time this horse crossed the border on a lease, same vet, same info provided on the documentation. Lessee listed as owner. This is driving me NUTS. I don't want the poor horse standing on the trailer for hours while the paperwork gets sorted out.

Who is taking the horse over the border? You? A commercial hauler? Someone else? You'll be fine. Ive had many occasions where I was shown as the owner / shipper on all of the paperwork but a friend took the horse over the border and she isn't noted anywhere and there were no problems at all ... A commercial hauler needs to use a customs broker. You or a friend - don't. You just need to fill the correct forms out at the border and see the Federal USDA vet and he will also check paperwork and stamp it and charge you the $46.00 or whatever it is now. Cant give him cash - has to be VISA ... It really is as easy and straightforward as can be ...  |

Then honestly it will be as easy and straightforward as it gets As long as the Coggins is current within 6 months and the export health papers current within 30 days, you are completely, 100% good to go. Many times the barn is listed as the owner when they're not. Or the trainer and they're not. It really makes no difference at all ... You're fine |

Be sure to send along a copy of the lease agreement signed by both parties. If there is a monetary value to it, they will be taxed on that valuation. I have two ponies up here on lease from the US and it WAS a bit of a hassle to get through. Picture a mare in heat on a trailer with a stallion  THAT was interesting to say the least. |

He left on Tuesday and arrived safe and sound on Wednesday. |

Yes, they decided to go with a different hauler. The first one wasn't going to take care of brokerage. Something that EVERY other one I spoke with does.
