I was just reading the recap from the USEA convention and apparently they passed a new rule that for beginner novice through training level(I guess the equivalent of our entry - training), jackets will not be required in an effort to make the sport more accessible to newcomers. Thoughts? www.chronofhorse.com/article/usea-convention-wrap-2014

I think if you're not doing a schooling show and are competing in sanctioned events, you should have a jacket. Otherwise it might as well just be schooling off property. I hope we don't allow this too.

I don't like the change- in the grand scheme of horses the cost of a jacket is a drop in the bucket. It only is worn for about 3-8 minutes unless you warm up with it too - but it looks so much nicer. Taking the jacket away just takes the atmosphere away imo - I even wear my jacket when jackets are excused because of heat - I just warm up without it on.

It still has to pass in January. Not official yet.

Even if it did pass, I would continue to wear a jacket. Its disrespectful to wear just a basic shirt or your blouse, unless its sweltering hot. This is right up there with braiding for show jumping to me. I think its nice to look neat and tidy and clean. Why should we make eventing more and more a schooling type of event?

we did agree on this. And I think we have agreed to disagree on many occasions.

I personally would like to see jackets as optional. In the summer I never ride with a jacket yet when showing it is required. I believe it affects my riding as it is just way too hot and having a stock around my neck is akin to wearing a polo neck. It's crazy to put riders through this - to hell with tradition I say. You can still look neat and tidy with a short sleeved open necked shirt and in fact judges can see better how well you sit when you don't have a jacket hiding the view I think it's time we had a new code of dress for the show ring! And while I am about it, whoever decided wearing white breeches was a good thing? Black is much more serviceable not to say more slimming! And I'd be able to camouflage the green slobber a little better!

don't like it. The fabrics out there are amazing now-a-days...they are designed to keep you cool on those crazy hot days. Fits has a beautiful jacket that is pretty much mesh (though you can't tell), and most companies have 'cool max' type clothing that really make a difference. 15 years ago when I showed every weekend, I used a bib-type stock tie that I could just wear a tank top under, and would only wear my jacket just before I went in the ring. Even if jackets were excused, wearing one for 5-6 min was not that much of a hardship. and Euphemia....you don't have to wear white breeches....beige is perfectly acceptable, and you can wear black on XC if you want

To me the worst thing is the stock tie - but I have rectified that - I now make custom Satin Dressage Stock Tie Bibs - wear what ever you want underneath - lightweight sport shirts underneath and tanks work great. The beauty is the cover the top and are really easy to put on/take off - no more tying and the pin can be left on.
